NORDEN joins industry stakeholders in signing up to the Sea Cargo Charter

NORDEN has today become a founding signatory of the Sea Cargo Charter, which commits members to transparent reporting of shipping emissions within the tanker and dry cargo segments.

The international shipping industry is estimated to be responsible for 2 - 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has set a target to reduce shipping’s total annual carbon emissions to at least 50% of 2008 levels by 2050.

NORDEN today joins some of the world’s largest shipping, energy, agriculture, mining, and commodity trading companies in committing to disclosing the climate impact of their shipping activities.

The Sea Cargo Charter establishes a common framework for a transparent and consistent approach to tracking emissions which is critical to making shipping more sustainable. The initiative will allow customers to make decisions on choosing carriers based not only on economics, but also on minimising the environmental footprint of their cargo.

Alongside the other founding members, NORDEN helped to develop the charter in conjunction with the Global Maritime Forum.

Jan Rindbo, CEO, NORDEN said: “NORDEN is proud to join the Sea Cargo Charter, which we hope will increase focus on greenhouse gas emissions in the industry and become a tool for increased transparency, creating a joint language for clients and shipping firms towards the shared goal of reaching the IMO’s climate goals.”

Large industrial corporations are the biggest users of international shipping services, with shipping of crude oil, refined oil products, iron ore, bauxite, grain and other bulk commodities accounting for over 80% of global seaborne trade.

“Tackling the climate challenge in shipping will involve a collective effort from all industry stakeholders,” said Jan Rindbo. “By putting carbon emissions at the forefront, we hope to spur more discussions with our customers about green transportation. We would urge all our industry partners to sign up so that we can progress on the decarbonisation journey together.”

NORDEN is committed to its decarbonisation agenda through a number of initiatives - including using advanced data analytics to increase fuel and vessel efficiency; and the development of alternative fuel solutions such as biofuel.
